Basic rabbinic authority

The heretical and dissident movements in Jewish history — Karraites, Sabbateans, Hassidim – represent ideological strains the rabbinic regime had been failing to maintain. Each movement, however, viewed the rabbinic regime as the legitimate ground state for the Jewish people. It will perhaps require the catastrophe of the Genocide and then a few more generations to digest it for the Jewish people to do away with that presumption of basic rabbinic authority.
