The Gedolim wrap the matter of the Moshiach in a bubble of fantasy so as to keep us from thinking on the problem from a realistic point of view. The easiest path to affecting distraction is to force a topic into unreality. So long as Jews are arguing about whether the Moshiach has to be Santa Claus before he can be authentic they're never going to get to the practical questions of how to manage the real process of establishing a state.
