The key to applying desert/vengeance is to know two things: what is right; and where to stop the chain of causation. Autonomy is not only about self-determination, it is also about duty, the willingness to take responsibility, which is to say, the willingness to stop the responsibility from moving beyond oneself. As the gift has to keep on moving, so the blame needs to be contained.
The container of blame is duty.
