Most peoples revere their ancestors and extol the virtues of their forbearers. The Jewish people do so too; but in order for them to escape their exile they will need also to identify those forbearers who led them into collapse, and they will need to expiate themselves of those practices.
Identifying which forbearers led them into collapse is a delicate mythic situation for a people to find themselves in. It makes the Jewish people unique not only under the biblical regime but also under the rabbinic regime.
