Gratitude is closely related to desert. If we feel thankful, it is in no small part because we believe the other party deserves the gratitude. A gratitude-based society is a desert-based society.
In the modernists’ vision the individual does not necessarily imply a relationship with others. That implication is merely one choice among a myriad of choices the individual makes. The individual, therefore, does not imply the collective. That problem goes away when we introduce the notion of desert. Desert implies the other.
