The Jews in the pre-modern era and even into the modern era clung to whatever remnants of feudalism they could find because feudalism made it easy for the Jews to deal with the ruling elites. Feudalism made it easy for the Jews to facilitate the extraction of value by the aristocracy from the general public.
When we speak about the history of the Jews being useful to the local sovereigns what we really mean is that Jews facilitated the extraction by the rulers. The 'ein briera' (no choice) of exilic life allowed the Jewish diaspora communities to adopt morally dubious practices and justify them to themselves.
For the Jewish people to redeem their exile they must repudiate the 'ein briera' dodge and redefine the meaning of the Jewish people as the defenders of creativity and dignity and the promoters of justice.
