The hardened heart

The evidence of a leadership's bankruptcy is its willingness to superintend the collapse of its people and its civilization. In the case of a sovereign leadership such a collapse typically comes from natural catastrophe and ecological implosion. In the case of a diaspora leadership (such as the Jews' leaders) the collapse comes from man-made catastrophe like genocide. The key is not whether or not the leadership was able to fend off the catastrophe; the key is whether the leadership was able at least to respond to the signals of impending doom. The sign of a degenerate leadership is one whose heart becomes hardened and is unable to adjust to the calamity looming up in its near future.
