Modernity was not something that happened only to traditional Judaism; it was something that happened to the world, to every tradition in the world, including the Jewish tradition. Modernity needed to be met not as a threat but as a contemporary form of an ancient context against which the biblical regime was meant to struggle as far back as three millennia ago.
Modernity is not about current values versus past values, it is about hubris versus humility, and that particular battle has been going on since the dawn of civilization.
