How much of rabbinic power will survive the coming of the messiah? The rabbinic regime tried to preserve a zone of autonomy inside a secular government that could often be hostile to rabbinic power. The current struggle in the Orthodox world is over that zone of autonomy for rabbinic power. By defining the present government of Israel as secular and illegitimate, the rabbis are positioning themselves as not having to integrate with the secular governance structures. Instead, they are jockeying for a zone of autonomy within even the Jewish body politic. The question is what are the conditions, if any, under which rabbinic power would become voluntarily dissolved? Is there a sunset provision to the rabbinic regime or will they have to be deposed?
