The rise of the Rosh Yeshiva in the mitnagdic world mirrors the rise of the chassidishe Rebbe in hassidic world. Both reflected the loss of authority of the mora d'atra of the local community, which resulted from the centralization of power that characterized the rise of the nation-state. Today, the local rabbinic authority is practically non-existent. Authority in the orthodox Jewish world flows through the power centers of the regional or ideological authorities.
