Israel's sons were a marginal people, even in their sovereignty, by virtue of their being a small nation wedged between large, contending empires. The Jewish people were a marginal people, in their lack of sovereignty, by virtue of their living as guests in another people's territory.
Today, the State of Israel finds itself in the former situation but behaves as if she were in the latter situation.
