Not enough Church, too much State

Jewish civil society works to promote the dignity of the ordinary Israelite. The objective of the biblical regime is to enhance the ordinary Israelite's sense of autonomy and self-possession. Somewhere along the line the sacred institutions weakened and the political institutions began to take over. Israel became a people who chose monarchy or autocracy to rule them. They lost their sense of YHWH as their ruler. Their rulers lost their sense of having to serve the interests of the civil society. The trouble with the history of the Jewish people was: not enough church and too much state.
