The power to compel compliance in others

There are two styles of power: the power to create, and the power to shape one's environment. That second style is what people usually mean when they talk about power, especially when they talk about power and authority. Insofar as others define one’s environment, the power to shape one’s environment is the power to compel compliance in others. That ability to make other people comply with one's wishes is really a subset of the ability to shape one's environment.
