Israel, as a homeland for American Jews, differs from the homelands of all other American ethnic groups. American ethnics identify their homelands in terms of the countries of their origins, countries and ethnicities from which they or their ancestors came; Jewish ethnics define their homeland in terms of the country of their destiny, the country and ethnicity to which they or their descendants wish to move. The typical American ethnic homeland is about the past; the Jewish American ethnic homeland is about the future, it is about a promise.
