The reigning power structure

The shape of Jewish communal life was influenced as much by the relation with the host authority as it was by the internal directives of the Jewish leadership. Whether or not Jewish diaspora leadership was able to wield authority, it always first needed to relate to the reigning power structure. When that power structure began to challenge Jewish leadership it became a catastrophe for Jewish leadership's ability to wield power.
