Waiting, waiting

If the Jewish people wish to hasten the coming of the Moshiach, is all they can do merely to wait for him? Must Jews address his arrival only indirectly by performing secondary acts like tikkun olam or keeping Shabbos for two weeks in a row or what have you? Is there not some direct action the Jewish people could take to bring on the Moshiach? Is it not the case that the coming of the Moshiach is a political matter and not some ethereal, spiritual rapture-like event that can be approached only through some magical formula? Can't we just begin to lay down the political prerequisites for the arrival of a Messianic leader and then see what happens? Isn't that what the establishment of the State of Israel was really all about?
