Why must the Messiah be a king?

That the Messiah is modeled on King David is not so altogether wonderful. It places the kingship and the shape of the kingship at the center of Israel's destiny, and, we would argue, inappropriately so. The Bible's true instructions teach us the shape of the monarchy as well as the shape of the economic order are secondary to the establishment and the maintenance of the two sacred, mediating institutions: shabbat and miqdash.
