As the tide of anti-Semitism rose in Europe in the late 19th and early 20th centuries it became clear the solution to the Jewish problem lay elsewhere: either in Palestine or in America. The traditional rabbinate worked tirelessly to stem the exodus from the European diaspora. The rabbis had cast their lot with autocratic Europe, and in the end autocratic Europe became fascistic and exterminationist. The rabbis had chosen exactly wrong.
