The priests who ostensibly intermediate between man and God do not understand the mechanism of this engine of materialism. They rail against it. Some of the most extremist practitioners seal off their communities from the commerce of the mainstream culture but none of them understands how it works, nor are they inclined to research the mechanism.
They are as much in the grip of the materialist culture as is the rest of the society.
