By the gift of grace

Arrogance shows itself up in the argument that giving charity to the able-bodied weakens their moral fiber and undermines their ability to become self-sufficent.
To define gifts as insidious fails to recognize how much of every person's wealth has come to them by the gift of grace. Gifting must be a fundamental element in our social order, not something that is reserved to the particularly incapacitated – the widows and orphans and disabled, etc.
