As the models of natural selection inclines towards the values of selfishness so the models of bi-cameral communication in the brain inclines to values of collaboration and co-operation, of creative invention.
It is in the construction of consciousness that the values of culture and kindness come into their own. Culture and kindness act to shape the environment whereas competition and selfishness take the environment as given. The ability to shape one's environment rather than taking it as given is the consequence of abundance rather than the imperatives of scarcity.
We might even go so far as to define scarcity as the requirement that the environment must be taken as given rather than shaped by the actor.
