The malign logic of the Industrial Revolution was to combine the ideology of rationality with the hubris of technology and the plunder of God's providence to sweep away the benign sense of wholeness that came of life in a civil society and under a covenantal diety.
When we bemoan the sweeping away of cultural tradition before the onslaught of the Industrial Revolution we are, in fact, bemoaning the sweeping away of appreciating desert before the sleight of hand that comes of contractual payments. The latter is the instrument by which the former is accomplished.
