When someone gives someone something they reciprocate not necessarily for the value of the gift but rather for the meaning of the gift.
The meaning of the gift is measured in trust. The meaning is what the recipient appreciates and the meaning is that for which they feel gratitude.
The appreciation and the gratitude is what provokes the reciprocation.
