If the Renaissance revived the right hemispheric way of seeing the world, the Reformation brought the left hemisphere back with a vengeance.
The Reformation strove to establish a measure of certainty in our apprehension of the world. It gained that certainty by imposing a precision and a literalness to our understanding of the world which erased the ambiguity and the metaphoricness of previous worldviews.
Myth was sub-ordinated to precise ritual. The word overtook the image.
There and then began the process of disenchantment that wrung the life out of the collective vision of the world.
