Contract law and the private property rights it creates serves to allow strangers to relate to each other with the sort of trust they would otherwise only extend to members of their civil society. It is that trust which drives the real economic system; it is the extension of that credit which makes for the possibility of a flourishing economic order.
What the corporate and financial capitalists have been doing is leeching out the fertile core of that system of credit extension.
