Honor is the projection of the person into the public realm.
That projection into the public realm also happens when we build institutions, when markets form (going public, for example), when private information becomes public truth, when we make laws, and when we conceive of God.
God is the public manifestation of the carnal impulse to create and procreate, to build and to nurture. God is to the carnal impulse as parliaments are to the abstract impulse. The ancient world dealt with the public manifestation of the carnal impulse; the modern world deals with the public manifestation of the abstract impulse, the impulse of reason.
That God has a personality and operates in mythology and the processes of history is the direct consequence of His being the manifestation of the carnal/hormonal, which operates in the concrete interaction of people with each other.
The sacred is the concrete manifestation of the spirit, which is itself the non-material manifestation of the carnal. The sacred thus makes concrete in a public way what was fundamentally material in a private way.
