When the powers that be declared the coming into being of the State of Israel the Arab notables in Palestine all left their homes and chose to go into exile, to wait out the resolution of the ensuing conflict out of reach of the Israeli dominance. Their sense of honor was superior to their purchase on place.
When, in the following months, another quarter of a million Palestinians chose to leave their homes, some did so out of fear but many did so in emulation of their leadership's example. After the establishment of the state, all but 70K (later growing, through family reunion and return, back to 165,000) of the three quarters of a million Palestinians abandoned Israeli rule and became refugees.
