The absence of a moderate middle in the Arab world is not an accident. It comes of the widespread practice of the power/challenge style of political and social rule.
Where power/challenge prevails there is no such thing as a loyal opposition. All opposition is a potential threat, and even the most loyal adherents, sooner or later, will come to be seen as threats to the strong man ruler, especially if the loyal adherents flatter themselves into thinking they're entitled to have a mind of their own, and to give expression to that, possibly oppositional, set of mind.
