Dignity measures both directions of the relationship between an actor and his environment

There is a connection somewhere between dignity and the strength of character it takes to exercise self-restraint. If we define dignity as the measure of one's control over one's environment, then self-restraint is the analogue skill over one's own person which limits the control one's environment can have over one's own actions.
