Rights are an artifact of justice. People have rights because justice assigns it to them. Rights are the allocations of desert. They are the entitlements to what is their due. As a desert becomes formalized into property it becomes a right. Rights transform desert and the justice it represents into something over which people can contract and thereby rights make desert into something in which people could transact.
