The point of life beyond satiation

If the responsibilities of civic membership come down only to the relieving of the burdens of scarcity and threat, then self-interest trumps civic duty and it becomes absurd to engage in self-sacrifice for the sake of the common good. If, on the other hand, the responsibilities of civic membership amount to the fulfillment of the possibilities of abundance and security, then self-interest of course would not trump civic duty and it would become absurd not to engage in self-sacrifice for the sake of the common good. Such self-sacrifice is the whole point of life beyond satiation.
