The politics of resilience and sustainability

All of midrash, secular and traditional, focuses on the biblical teachings as, in one or another, constitutional: the Bible as the source of a political coming into being as a nation and a state of Israel's sons and the people of Israel. We disagree. As the Creation stories are there not to describe the genesis of the universe (the stories' functions are to address creative power), so the stories of Exodus, Leviticus and Numbers are there not to explain how Israel should be ruled but to describe how Israel's rulers should be constrained and restrained. The Bible deals with the politics not of constituence but with the politics of resilience and sustainability.
