The Enlightenment defined the conditions for understanding social change perhaps but it did not offer that much guidance on understanding social stasis. We need to understand how traditional societies do and don't work because the chief governing instrument of civil society is tradition, and if we would extol the virtues of civil society, then we had better understand how civil society regularly fail. We ought to take a closer, harder look at Shils' Tradition.
