The divine & human court

The disenchantment that modernity brought about was not only with respect to man's perception of his relation with the divine but also with respect to the feelings of affection and enthrallment people felt for each other.
The analogue of the divine court with the human court is not only with respect to the ruling elite; it is also of the higher authority with respect to civil society. The feelings of affection and attachment people feel for a beneficent God are mirrored in the feelings of union and solidarity people feel to those with whom they share their lived lives.
When people disenchant themselves of their relations to some higher authority they also disenchant themselves of the feelings of meaning and interpenetration they feel toward those with whom they share their lives.
