No end to them

The biblical regime removes from both the commercial and from the governmental domains the responsibility for purifying the social order. 
Purity is a chuqah, a concern that belongs on the other, divine side of the covenantal divide. Purification rites need always to be tempered for there is, in principle, no end to them. 
The totalitarian regime comes ultimately to define itself largely around its self-defined responsibilities to preserve the purity of the movement. Therein lies the essence of the regime's cruelty and monstrosity.
