"Totalitarianism in power uses the state as its outward facade, to represent the country to the non- totalitarian world. As such, the totalitarian state is the logical heir of the totalitarian movement from which it borrows its organizational structure." (The Origins of Totalitarianism, Hannah Arendt, 1994; page 420).
When the ideology of a movement takes priority over the interests of the people who constitute the movement we are ripe for the abuses and the insanity of totalitarian rule to take hold. The first victim of this reversal is honor. The totalitarian rulers feel entitled to conduct themselves with utter cynicism.
Totalitarian leaders don't feel bound by honor.
