A direct descendant of European fascism

To the ordinary man unimpressed with the ruling class, the rights and prerogatives of the sovereign in the administration of authority come across as privilege.
  • Honor and privilege is what legitimacy bestows on authority.
  • Privilege is the material manifestation of honor.
  • Privilege is legitimate so long as the honored comports himself with manifest public service.
As the adulterous wife is put to the ordeal more for allowing herself to fall into disrepute than for the actual adulterous behavior, so the sovereign must avoid even the semblance of partisanship and cronyism, which are the corresponding failures of desire that befall the rulers rather than the subjects. The immediate crony and partisan is like the immediate boyfriend, and the general welfare is like the husband. And what does the partisanship and cronyism look like when it is manifest in the people? Fanaticism and a fear of a dispassionate truth, and ethnic or racial strife.
The play South Pacific ties bravery in war to freedom from racial bigotry. WWII was a triumph of the forces of popular continence, of a temperance among the people, over the passions of racial and ethnic desire. Whether in discrediting the racism of the Nazis or in defeating the racism of the Japanese militarists or in integrating the American Army, the world came out of WWII a different place than it was when it went into it.
It will take another such cataclysm to do the same for the Muslim world. The Muslims need a Reformation, perhaps, but, more to the point, they need a WWII, the lessons of temperance that seemed to have passed them by in that great conflict. Whereas the European and Far Eastern rulers who followed the people's racism and ethnicism were defeated, discredited, punished and replaced, those rulers who did so in the Middle East remained in power.
Islamo-fascism is a direct descendant of European fascism because that Middle Eastern ruling class managed to escape the consequences of WWII, because of the oil and because their territories and ideas weren't important enough.
