The rebel has replaced submission to the will of the sovereign with celebration of one's personal desire. Correspondingly the autocrat replaces promoting the truth or conceding policies of distributive justice from genuine affection with doing those things because he is yielding to the will of the people.
The ticklish situation comes up when the rebel is asked to honor the prerogatives of the sovereign. If the sovereign accepts the rebel’s refusal to honor the sovereign’s prerogatives, it comes across as appeasement. Likewise, when the autocrat is asked to do his duty and denounce falsehood or punish with one law, if he fails to do so it comes across as cronyism.
