Honor, dignity and the virtues

  • Honor is the public display of fortitude and temperance (chastity); dignity is the public display of justice and prudence.
  • Honor is what authority asks of the people; diginity is what the people ask their leadership to bestow on them.
  • The right promotes honor; the left promotes dignity.
  • Honor without dignity is brittle; dignity without honor is lax.
The covenant between honor and dignity encourages a union between, on the one side, fortitude and temperance with, on the other side, justice and prudence. That covenant is what the Biblical story of God's encounter with the People of Israel is trying to depict.
