When it comes to relations between the sexes the honor/shame dynamic intensifies into the dynamic of pride/humiliation.
The male emphasis on female virginity coupled with the practice of men deflowering their brides as a sign of virility, the grotesque practice of female circumsicion, the general depiction of sexual attraction as evil and the concommitant gender bias that oppresses women as second class members of society all push the matter of honor into pride, and the matter of shame into humiliation.
The act of sexual intercourse in this pride/humiliation society has lost its possibility of intimacy and personal tenderness and has become instead the arena of public pride. Ironically, the consequence of all this emphasis on male pride and female humiliation is a wide-spread incidence of sexual impotence among the men.
By making the private public the power relation infiltrates every corner of social life and subjugates it to the needs of status, vengeance and personal glory. For women and for men both, that means a world where sexual intercourse as an act of personal communication and fulfillment has become more difficult. With intercourse undermined it becomes a supremely selfish world these people come to inhabit.
The rot of self-serving interaction rather than mutual regard and collaboration has penetrated the most fundamental unit of society – the family – and as a result the social order is by custom and by emotional fiat more brutal, more impersonal, deadened of the spirit of creativity, and stripped of the freedom of thought and action.
