De-meritocracy

Humility is the ability to recognize undeservedness in oneself.
To appreciate another's beneficence is the essence of humility. For a society truly to function as a meritocracy it must be able to function also as a de-meritocracy, where not only one's flaws but also one's own lack of contribution to the achievement of some common objective operate to shape judgments and evaluations.
Humility is the ground of equality. Without humility, the recognition of equality among fellows or members of a society becomes difficult to maintain.
