The moral memory of mankind

"Gratitude is perhaps the only feeling which, under all circumstances, can be morally demanded and rendered ... [It] seems to reside in a point in us which we do not allow to change ... Gratitude, as it were, is the moral memory of mankind." (Georg Simmel, quoted in The Gift of Thanks, Margaret Visser, 2008; page 238).
