Vengeance mimics gift exchange.
- Each party delivers a self-initiated injury or gift to the other;
- a period of digestion ensues during which time the receiving party appreciates or resents the other party for their action;
- the other party reciprocates;
- a relationship is built where the parties stand out as particular to each other;
- a culture evolves either of anger or of generosity; and
- the chain of action and reaction continues indefinitely.
- The pagans saw the world in terms of unending vengeance;
- The worshippers of a providential God in the mainstream religions see the world in terms of unending beneficence.
