When the covenant is tested

The brit is a treaty that explicitly defines a covenantal relation. The first relation in the story of Creation is covenantal but it doesn't require a treaty. Only when the covenant is tested do treaties, britot, become necessary. Hence the first brit is with Noah as he enters the ark, not with Adam. The first brit with Avraham is the treaty of the parts, not when he leaves Padan Aram.
