Humor is a mediator of diplomacy. In humor one party says something aggressive to another party and the other party takes it not as aggression but as embrace. So partyA offers a 'bad' to partyB, where the bad is an offer to reciprocate with self-restraint.
Mediation is the art of eliciting diplomacy, of exchanging self-restraint, of setting the ground for covenantal behavior.
