For most of history up to the 19th century the honor elites also constituted the upper classes. Honorship and leadership belonged to social class. Social class was the medium through which cultural values were promulgated and promoted.
The 20th century began to see the demise of those class distinctions, and with that demise, a re-stratification along different lines. Today's culture war is the extension of the class war that was everywhere being waged in the 19th and the early part of the 20th century.
The question is can we end the culture war by foritfying the leaders of the centrist institutions?
