Stark and unforgiving

"Morality is nuanced and subtle; there are shades of right and wrong, innocence and guilt. Honor is stark and unforgiving: either you fight or you run; either you are a hero or a coward; either you are chaste or a whore. Everything about it is at odds with the spirit of our age: so analytical, so psychological, so non-"judgmental" and so much in love with nuance, irony and ambiguity." (Honor: A History, James Bowman, 2006; page 37).
