The experience of satisfaction

Welfare measures pleasure while contentment measures satisfaction.
Welfare measures what the material outcome of a decision can deliver; contentment measures what the non-material outcome of conduct can deliver.
Drugs transform pleasure into satisfaction. That's why they're addictive.
Drugs make the experience of satisfaction easy to come by, which turns out to be especially useful in a society that makes satisfaction hard to come by.
