Autonomy, mastery, purpose

  • Autonomy, the urge to direct our own lives;
  • Mastery, the desire to get better and better at something meaningful;
  • Purpose, the yearning to do what we do in the service of something larger than ourselves:
The end state of these three motivators is nothing more than satisfaction.
Management is better for compliance but self-direction works better for engagement.
Pay people adequately and fairly and then give them lots of autonomy.
