To model the universe of childhood

Immaturity is a time of growth and a time of the kind of insatiable appetites that prevail in environments of scarcity and danger; maturity is a time of stability and a time of the kind of satiating appetites that open up to an appreciation of more refined values and that prevail in environments of abundance and security.
Neo-classical economics was invented by bright adolescents, precocious fools, who were unable the grasp the imperatives of adulthood and so opted to model the universe of childhood. A good chunk of Enlightenment thinking was devised by these precocious fools. The impending global environmental catastrophe can be chalked up to their seductive, persuasive immaturity.
The same sort of foolish precocity infected the traditional religions as well.
The modern world is losing that authoritative voice able to speak with the gravity of an adult in an adult world.
